Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
The Seeing for Ourselves (SFO) mission is to promote social change using participatory photography. We train and equip marginalized and disenfranchised groups to take charge of their own narrative by taking photographs that command attention, promote self-actualization, and shift dominant paradigms. We publish the carefully sequenced results combined with an institutional back story that amplifies the power of each photograph, and promote the publication to multiple audiences.
Seeing for Ourselves is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our work approach features a lean, flexible team of participatory photography practitioners who call upon other talent as needed. While we will expand our bandwidth as appropriate to handle more work, there is no bureaucracy and virtually no overhead.
Our first work is the widely acclaimed self-portrait of NYC housing project residents, Project Lives: New York Residents of Public Housing Photograph Their World. Based on its success in creating a fertile ground for the refunding of NYC housing projects, the city has asked us to now focus on the criminal justice system, in Supervised Lives: New Yorkers on Probation Photograph Their World. The intent is nothing less than a reform of the criminal justice system.
