The Bach and Beethoven Ensemble seeks to 1) pioneer cutting edge music projects that merge genres and disciplines, 2) present these works to untapped audiences, and 3) provide a platform to launch new and upcoming professional artists
The Bach and Beethoven Ensemble (BBE) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2009 by Brandi Berry and Curtis Foster. The ensemble presents music across eras, early to modern, in a historically informed manner (e.g. the way it would have been performed at the time) using historical instruments. It is currently led by Artistic Director Brandi Berry and Executive Director Thomas Aláan.
The BBE has performed across the Midwestern and the Northeastern United States on a range of series and festivals. With a diverse list of artists-mostly young professionals, drawn from around the United States-the ensemble explores a highly diverse repertoire, often collaborating with other performing artists across disciplines. In any given season, audiences may hear programs featuring:
- music from any classical periods (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic)
- folk music intertwined with classical traditions
- fusions of classical music with other genres (e.g. BaroqueRock)
- and newly composed works for the ensemble.
In 2016, the BBE will present its first Chicago-Based concert series. Other projects for development include a tour of the Northwestern United States; a Chicago production of Scotland’s first opera, written by Allan Ramsay and entitled "The Gentle Shepherd;" the development of educational outreach programming based in performance practice.
