Mission Statement

GearUp Lowell is a federal grant program designed to increase the number of low income students prepared to enter and succeed in post secondary education. GearUp Lowell strives to increase students' academic success, increase knowledge of college options and financial aid, increase college acceptance rates, provide early intervention services for at-risk students, and establish partnerships between schools, higher education institutions, and community organizations.

Description

GearUp (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergarduate Programs) is a six-year federally funded college awareness program that works with Lowell Public School students and their parents. We provide academic assistance in the form of tutoring, mentoring, parent workshops, parent education classes, college and career awareness, and after school enrichment programs.

In 2005, GearUp Lowell started working with 7th grade middle school students at the Robinson, Stoklosa, Rogers, Butler and Sullivan Middle Schools in Lowell, MA. We have followed this group of students to 8th grade, and on to Lowell High School in 2007 as they entered their freshman year. GearUp Lowell will continue to support this cohort during sophomore year in the fall of 2008, junior year in 2009, and senior year in 2010.

Our goal is to see many of our students accepted into a two or four year college or university.
