Mission Statement

STAR's mission is to preserve and expand the arts community at Hunters Point Shipyard by:

  • Conserving affordable artist studios and work spaces
  • Complementing and supporting arts programs in the surrounding community
  • Creating arts exhibition and education facilities
  • Promoting the shipyard as a hub of artistic activity

Description

Programs

In addition to STAR grants to organizations who work in the surrounding community, STAR has produced historical exhibits at the Bayview Opera House, staged planning conferences with the Bayview community and greater Bay area arts community. As Shipyard redevelopment continues, STAR will increase our efforts engaging the community and planning the future arts community to ensure that the needs of the community and artists are articulated and met throughout the process. In addition we implement an artist-in-residence program for artists who have a connection with the Bayview-Hunters Point community

Additional Comments from the Organization

STAR has been quite successful in keeping artists on the Hunters Point Shipyard and now securing a permanent home on the property in spite 25 years of attempts to have us removed. We count Speaker Nancy Pelosi as trusted ally.

STAR is an amazing artist colony providing affordable studio space for artists. STAR has also been committed to supporting the local community in Hunter's Point.
