Mission Statement

The mission of the WBC Community Development Corporation, a 501 (c) (3) faith based non-profit organization, is to serve the communities of Northwest Baltimore, MD through social programming, economic strategies and affordable housing opportunities. It was birthed out of Wayland Baptist Church for the purpose of assisting neighborhoods located in 21216, 21215 and 21207, in its process of change to be a place where safe environmental welcoming communities strive, viable diverse homes exist, and where famiies and individuals can live productive lives.

Description

WBC CDC Housing and Community Development Initiatives include the following programs:

Housing Development

·Rental Housing. WBCCDC seeks to develop new housing rental units, including Wayland Village a 90 unit complex, with the expected completion in 2010.

·Housing Preservation

·Neighborhood Improvement effort to increase code enforcement on blighted properties.

·To improve open green space developing and maintain Chelsea Community Garden.

·Neighborhood Beautification projects to improve common area with flowers, plantings, trash receptacles biweekly litter removal, seasonal holiday displays.


Community Development

Youth Mentoring - WBC CDC partners with Project Garrison/ Meet Me Halfway, a Garrison Middle School mentoring program operating 5 days a week. This program operates at Garrison Middle School.

Youth for Green is a community service work learning experience for school age youth from low-income households. Youth for Green participants receive a stipend and training in environmental studies through neighborhood environmental projects, "Beautiful Neighborhood" and "Seed to Table" programs.

"Beautiful Neighborhood" is a project to improve common areas, educate and motivate residents to improve the neighborhood.

The "Seed to Table" program includes planting and growing vegetables and selling those products at the local
farmers market.


Public safety efforts include "Campaign for Peace - March and Rally commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "a public safety effort to reduce violence in Baltimore."

The Neighborhood Fair held in August providing families fellowship offering food and entertainment, back to school supplies, clothing and personal hygiene kits for individuals.

Senior Services provides seniors with information, referrals, health and recreational opportunities.
