Mission Statement

The purpose of the Ketchikan Public Library is to provide informational, educational, and recreational materials and services for the people of the City of Ketchikan and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. This is accomplished through development, maintenance, and promotion of materials, physical spaces, and programs responsive to the diverse interest and needs of our community.

Description

The Public Library is part of the First City Libraries consortium, a nine member group that includes the UAS Ketchikan campus library and the public schools. The FCL consortium has a single shared catalog, a courier, and open sharing between libraries. All public school students are automatically given a consortium-wide library account.

The Library offers a wide variety of formats, including DVDs, CDs, Playaways, Read-alongs, CD-Roms, graphic novels, magazines, and books (of course!). As a member of the ListenAlaska OverDrive partnership, the Library offers Ketchikan patrons access to over 15,000 audiobook, eBook and music titles for downloading.

Library staff reach out to the community through bi-weekly interviews on KRBD public radio, a newspaper column, Facebook, blogs, a website, a Teen Advisory Group, and partnerships with many different local organizations.

Ketchikan is one of 2 communities in the entire state with an Outreach program, which visits the homebound, institutionalized and the incarcerated in our shiny library van (the "Librarians Rock" tag on the back is a great photo op!)
