Mission Statement

Geeks Rule is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on eliminating the racial, gender and socioeconomic gaps that exist in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). We do this by increasing interest and proficiency in STEM among students at underserved secondary schools in the NYC area.

Description

Geeks Rule was established in 2014 with the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority students who attend college and pursue a career in a STEM field. Our unique step approach:

  • RAISES AWARENESS by bringing in STEM professionals to speak in front of classes
  • GENERATES ENTHUSIASM by taking classes on field trips to STEM organizations
  • BUILDS PROFICIENCY through problem-based learning activities in our afterschool programs, which are offered in partnership with afterschool providers
Geeks Rule partnered with Teachers College (Columbia U.) to create a unique afterschool program that provides fun, hands-on activities that are aligned with the school curriculum to re-enforce learning while building enthusiasm.

To date, Geeks Rule has served over 1000 students through our speaker and field trip programs, and we are rolling out our afterschool program in September, 2018 to middle schools in the NYC area. After we roll out the afterschool program that will help students find their passion, we will develop field-specific clubs, such as a Geek Bio Club or Geek Engineering Club, that will give students a chance to pursue their passion. Then, we will introduce these programs into the high schools, before expanding our programs nationally.

We are looking to add members to our dynamic, accomplished board to help lead us to the next level.
