The PEN/Faulkner Foundation builds audiences for literature in order to foster a literate and creative society. Founded in 1980 to administer the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the organization has expanded its focus to include bringing readers in direct contact with writers, and working with teachers to promote readership among high school students.
PEN/Faulkner is a nonprofit literary organization that promotes a lifelong love of reading and a connection to writing through public events, in-school education, and public promotion of exceptional literary achievement. We annually administer the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, one of the highest honors available to American fiction writers.
We believe that personal engagement with literature has the capacity to enhance every life. For over 25 years, we have worked with public and charter schools in D.C. through our Writers in Schools program, donating thousands of books to thousands of students, and bringing hundreds of writers into classrooms across the city for enlightening discussions about their books, and contemporary literature.
