Mission Statement

The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) envisions a community where all adults have the literacy skills that enable them to achieve their personal and professional goals. RAALP's mission is to help community members transform their lives through enhanced literacy.

Description

The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) provides free, student-centered, one-to-one tutoring to adults in both Basic Literacy (native English speakers reading at or below the 6th grade level) and English-as-a-Second-Language. Volunteer tutors must take a free training provided by the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. After training in either BL or ESL tutoring techniques, tutors are matched with an adult student. RAALP provides learning materials for adult students and on-going support. Tutor training is in the Espanola area; one-to-one tutoring sessions can be scheduled in any public place, at times convenient to the student-tutor pair. Volunteer commitment is two hours per week, for a minimum of six months.
