Mission Statement

In the 1940s, working women were making new inroads to the business world. Women were changing the face of industry and having a positive economic impact. Hilary A. Bufton Jr., a Kansas city businessman, recognized women's potential, and saw the need for an organization to support and empower them to reach their career goals. As a result, in 1949, Bufton founded the American Business Women's Association. ABWA has dedicated 60 years to women's education and provided workplace skills and career-development training. Professional development remains the cornerstone of ABWA today. There are over 25,000 members nationwide in 600 chapters. ABWA is located in all 50 states. Over 7,000 members own their own business. Whether it is to develop business skills or to contribute to the education of women by providing scholarships, ABWA offers members many ways to build for their future through personal and professional growth.

Description

Suburban Connection was officially pronounced a local chapter to the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) in July 2006. As a ABWA Suburban Connection member you will have the advantage of not only enhancing your resume and professional background but also participate in community involvement and develop lasting relationships with fellow business women.

We are part of the Eastern Michigan Council , a network of other ABWA chapters in southeastern Michigan. This increases your networking opportunities as the chapters share their ongoing events with each other.

Each year ABWA Suburban Connection members coordinate a number of social, networking, educational and fund-raising events. Every spring we host a show that includes a silent auction. Part of the proceeds are donated to local charities. Past recipients of donations have been Make A Wish Foundation and My Friends Care Cancer Fund.
