"To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan." Abraham Lincoln
Honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.
To be a patient-centered integrated health care organization for veterans providing excellent health care, research, and education; an organization where people choose to work; an active community partner; and a back-up for National emergencies.
VA provides a Medical Benefits Package, a standard enhanced health benefits plan available to all enrolled veterans. This plan emphasizes preventive and primary care, and offers a full range of outpatient and inpatient services within VA health care system.
VA maintains an annual enrollment system to manage the provision of quality hospital and outpatient medical care and treatment to all enrolled veterans. A priority system ensures that veterans with service-connected disabilities and those below the low-income threshold are able to be enrolled in VA's health care system.
Over the years, as health care has moved from the inpatient arena to outpatient services, the hospital has reduced the bed level from the original number to 100 beds today. Outpatient visits, on the other hand, have gone up dramatically, to well over 200,000 visits per year. The Medical Center serves a population of over 131,000 veterans residing within its primary service area which encompasses 15 northeast Texas counties, five southwestern Arkansas counties and 12 northwest Louisiana parishes.
