Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) is a 501(c )(3) not-for-profit social service agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. LSSI's mission statement: Responding to the Gospel, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois brings healing, justice and wholeness to people and communities guides the agency as it served over 57,000 people last year. Founded in 1867 as an orphanage for children whose parents were dying of cholera, LSSI now provides 191 programs including adoption, foster care, substance abuse treatment, behavioral health services, nursing care for older adults, residential care for individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities, subsidized housing, Head Start, counseling and prison ministry.
