Are you interested in learning about this unique urban forest and sharing what you know with park visitors? Then consider becoming a Nature Center Ambassador! Forming as a non-profit organization in 1970, Friends of Tryon Creek provides environmental education programs for all ages through camps, field trips, events and stewardship. The mission of Friends of Tryon Creek, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire every community to identify, cultivate or reclaim their relationship with nature in this cherished urban forest. Ambassadors play a foundational role in deepening individual and community relationships with nature. All volunteers at Tryon are Ambassadors that represent the values and vision of Friends of Tryon Creek and Oregon State Parks. Volunteer Responsibilities Develop an understanding of Friends of Tryon Creek, Oregon State Parks and the park Greet and share information with visitors in the Nature Center Nature Store stocking and sales Front desk reception This volunteer role requires an initial interview and training. Volunteers are supported by Friends of Tryon Creek and Oregon State Parks staff. Shifts are from 9am-12:30pm or 12:30pm - 4pm, and can be scheduled any day of the week. Time commitments can vary from weekly to once a month depending on your schedule.

Do you have a passion for leading children in fun and inclusive outdoor programs? Summer Counselor volunteer to assist Friends of Tryon Creek staff and instructors in facilitating a safe, fun and educational outdoor experience for Tryon Forest Adventures nature day camp program for groups of children from 6 - 14 years old as they hike and learn in the forest. No previous experience needed! Volunteer Position Requirements Age 14 years and older To confirm placements and supplement program costs families will pay a one-time fee. $20 for members and $50 for non-members. If this presents a barrier please reach out to us. Time Commitment minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 4 weeks (preferred) taking place between June 23rd - August 29th, 2025. In person group interviews, several date options in mid-May. Interested in sharing your love of nature with youth? Learn how to lead groups of approximately 10 K-5th grade students and provide an hour-long educational field trip hike through Tryon Creek State Natural Area. Themes include topics such as adaptable animals, plant and tree ID, and watersheds. Specific time commitments are needed as Field trips take place Mondays - Thursdays primarily in the spring and fall between 9:30 - 11:30 am. No prior experience is needed. Culturally informed training and professional development are provided. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Lead groups of approximately 10 students and 1-2+ adult chaperones on educational hike and classroom activity. Ongoing learning to maintain an understanding of current field trip curriculum activities. Personal commitment to Implement philosophy of each education program, stressing science education, cultural relevance, discovery and hands-on learning, practices of conservation, and respect for the forest. Interact closely with students, teachers, chaperones and other nature guides. Group management to ensure their safety (use adult chaperones), and to help everyone in the group have a successful, positive experience. Actively participate in pre-hike student orientations. Attend and actively participate in Nature Guide training. TRAINING Participate in presentations by staff on park habitat, watersheds, ethnobotany and the plants and animals of the park Learn group dynamics, and techniques in working with young children Participate in guided hikes, focusing on park plants and wildlife Participate in practicing trailside interpretation sessions Participate in activities highlighting ecosystems, populations, conservation, environmental impacts, group dynamic on the trails Shadow experienced guides with group on the trail Participate in special enhancement training days that may include lectures, professional workshops, walks in the park, potlucks, etc.
