The Mission Statement of the NC Transportation Museum and Foundation

The Mission of the North Carolina Transportation Museum and Foundation at Historic Spencer Shops is to preserve and interpret the history of transportation in North Carolina and to present this history in a manner which allows visitors to enjoy their experience as well as learn from it.

Objectives related to the mission are: · To preserve the buildings and other historic features of Spencer Shops · To interpret the history of the Southern Railway repair facility, the community and the people who were associated with it. · To operate an on-going program of transportation artifact restoration and conservation.

Description

The North Carolina Transportation museum is dedicated to preserving the history of all transportation in NC. The museum is located on a former steam repair facility for Southern Railway, known as Spencer Shops. The museum has 57 acres and three exhibit buildings currently open to the public. The exhibits include Wagons Wheels and Wings, Bumper to Bumper, and the Roundhouse. We have one of the largest operational roundhouses in the United States. Our museum is volunteer run and driven.
