Mission: To advocate for community gardens of all kinds, connect partners, provide education, and share resources in order to sustain existing and help develop new community gardens, The CCGC strives to increase community food security and improve access to healthy food, protect and improve the quality of our open space resources and strengthen community involvement.
We are a small non-profit organization founded in 2011 by Carlsbad citizens who wish to advocate for more community gardens in our city and the region. We collaborate with the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation staff for some maintenance and upkeep issues as well as any plans for future gardens on city land.
We have recieved several grants to assit the Harold E. Smerdu Community Garden (now in its 31st year) and grants to help in establishing Carlsbad's second community garden- Calavera Schoolhouse Community Garden- which opened in April of 2014. The City of Carlsbad installed the irrigation and fencing for the new garden, and volunteers buit the raised boxes.
But we still have a long waiting list and need more gardens in the city of Carlsbad! We contiue our outreach efforts through a quarterly newsletter, social media, and by hosting a bi-monthly informational table at the State Street Farmers Market.
Our Goals:
"Grow" More Gardens- Public community gardens in every quadrant of the city
Establish policy which is supportive of the community gardens (i.e., general plan, park policies, zoning code)
Share Resources, Information & Efforts
Make garden resources available to all residents and gardening groups
Collaborate with groups and individuals on the development of new community gardens
Facilitate "best practices" in gardening and community garden development
