Description
The Athens Area Humane Society is a No-kill, charitable organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare and the human-animal bond in the Athens area.
Serving the community for more than 25 years, the Athens Area Humane Society was the only open-admission shelter in the Athens area for cats and other small domestic animals. However, in July of 2009, the organization transitioned to a No-Kill Shelter.
AAHS is working to end pet overpopulation. We offer low-cost spays, neuters, and vaccinations at the Athens Regional Spay & Neuter Center. We make this life-saving surgery affordable so that community pets can lead longer, healthier lives and no longer contribute to the epidemic of pet overpopulation.
The programs and services of AAHS reach beyond sheltering and adoption alone. Counselors provide lifelong behavior consultation to animal owners, and referrals when needed. We also help community members search for their lost pets by providing search tips and maintain a database of lost and found records.
AAHS believes that humane education is an essential component of building a kinder, more responsible community. That is why AAHS representatives visit scout troops, local schools, and civic organizations to educate the community about respect and kindness toward pets and all living things.
We receive no government funding and operate strictly off donations and fees for services.
