Volunteer as either an Equestrian Leader or Sidewalker on our Adaptive Horseback lessons! As a leader, your role is to work with the horse, take directions from the instructor and to bring a fun yet calming energy to our lessons. As a sidewalker, your role is to assist the participant with mounts, dismounts (if needed) and stability while on the horse. Prior equestrian experience preferred but not required. Must be 14 years or older. Challenge Course Role Description: Peer Partners will assist with supporting participant skill development and confidence and encourage participants with coaching on their technique. On challenge course programs you will be expected to stay on top of the challenge course, suspended 40+ feet in the air. This opportunity is not recommended for those afraid of heights. Cycling and Mountain Biking Role Description: Peer Partners are responsible for safety, group management, and encouraging participant engagement in the bike programs. For mountain bikers, you must be comfortable riding a blue trail and confidently ride around berms and bumps without falling. For road cyclists, you must be able to comfortable ride up to 10 miles without stopping. Challenge Course Assistants assist recreation instructors with facilitating high and low ropes programs at the National Ability Center challenge course. Volunteers help fit participants with harness and helmets, belay participants, help with course facilitation and guidance, and assist in maintaining a safe course. Description
The National Ability Center offers a wide variety of year-round activities, which include alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, swimming, cycling, waterskiing, horseback riding, rafting and camping trips, challenge course activities, leadership training and more!
Individuals of all ages and abilities take part in the Ability Center's programs, including those with orthopedic, spinal cord, neuromuscular, visual and hearing impairments, as well as those with cognitive disabilities. Specially designed equipment is available for many of the activities.
