The Institute of Women Today operates two interim housing shelters; Maria Shelter a 50 bed facility for homeless women and children, and Believe, a 50 bed shelter for families. In addition, IWT maintains the Vincennes Senior Center where nearly 100 seniors participate in social and educational programs and receive a hot lunch. The mission of the Institute of Women Today (IWT) is to provide transitional housing for homeless women, their children, and families; and to provide experiences that empower, mentor, and support persons experiencing homelessness and the broader community so they can achieve their highest potential.
The Institute of Women Today (IWT) was founded in 1974 by Sister Margaret Traxler and a group of interfaith women to improve the legal position of women in America, particularly those suffering from poverty, racism and injustice. . Gradually the focus of IWT changed from primarily advocacy to primarily direct service as the organization identified and shifted its attention to housing as one of the largest unmet needs of women and families. Today, IWT operates two homeless shelters, one for women and children, and one for families, one of the fastest growing homeless populations. IWT offers many supportive programs that enable the residents to gain the skills and supports necessary for independence. IWT also maintains the Vincennes Senior , where area seniors participate in programs (many in collaboration with shelter residents.)
