Mission Statement

The mission of Commonwealth Tenants Association (CTA) is to build community leadership and improve the quality of life for residents of the Commonwealth Housing Development and the 91-95 Washington Street Apartments for the elderly and disabled located in Brighton. The CTA works to accomplish its mission for the housing developments culturally diverse population of over 1,000 tenants through its advocacy and organizing, education, employment, and youth programs.

Description

In the 1970s the Commonwealth Housing Development was considered among the most dangerous public housing facilities in Boston. During this time occupancy fell more than 60% windows were boarded up, buildings fell into disrepair. The CTA worked with the BHA and CMC in securing and initiating a $30 Million redevelopment project that renovated and revitalized our community. These funds also helped the CTA to establish educational and social programs, initiate conflict resolution classes, and produce community-wide events for its 1000+ resident’s. The CTA is also a third party signatory to the management contract of the development, making it one of only two housing developments in Boston to be privately managed. In this capacity the CTA works with the BHA and CMC to ensure a safe and well-maintained living environment; to establish residents as full partners in the management of their homes; and to empower residents as the true leaders and responsible stewards of their community.
