Mission Statement

Our mission is to help reduce poverty and foster economic growth in Nigeria through programs that promote equity and access to quality education. More than 10 million children of primary school age in Nigeria - more than any other country in the world - are denied access to basic education. Most of those children are girls. In the northern region of Nigeria only 4% of females complete secondary school. Based upon the belief that educating and empowering women and girls is a key to economic development in Nigeria, addressing the disparities in girls’ education is the top priority for our organization.

Description

With a population of more than 170 million, Nigeria is the largest country in sub-saharan Africa. Nigeria also has very valuable natural resources. For example, it is the world's twelfth largest producer of petroleum. But millions of people are in poverty. Therefore, it is important for Africa and the entire world that Nigeria's economy grows. PCNAF was formed by a small group of former Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Nigeria in the 1960s. We understand the great value of education because we have seen first-hand evidence of how it helps to reduce poverty and promote economic growth. So we decided to focus on addressing some of the nation’s educational needs. In addition to offering financial assistance to female Nigerian students in both Nigeria and the US, we are also committed to serving as a catalyst for enhancing public awareness here in America about the girls' education crisis in Nigeria and how it is impacting our lives as well.
