Mission Statement

Gunston Hall's mission is to utilize fully the physical and scholarly resources of Gunston Hall to stimulate continuing public exploration of democratic ideals as first presented by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.

Description

Today a history museum, Gunston Hall was once the center of a 5,500-acre tobacco and corn plantation. Its owner, George Mason IV (1725-1792), was a fourth generation Virginian who became a senior statesman and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, Mason was among the first to call for such fundamental American liberties as religious toleration and freedom of the press.

Volunteers at Gunston Hall annually serve more than 6000 school children and thousands of additional guests. They also help with archaeological work and behind-the-scenes projects.

This beautiful historic site is located on 550 wooded acres with a view of the Potomac River. The museum is on Mason Neck and is only a few minutes' drive from I-95 and US Route 1.
