Mission Statement
Mission: Provide administrative, personnel, financial and program management oversight to the operations of the War Memorials; protect the physical properties of the Commission and the safety and security of the users of the facilities and the facility staff on the premises; preserve Commission structures and parklands, including routine and special maintenance, capital improvements, routine and special custodial services and contract administration and present the history of Hoosier veterans, their valor, sacrifice and fidelity, against the backdrop provided by historical records of our nation's armed conflicts.
Description
The IndianaWar Memorial Commission is a state agency that operates in pursuit of the inscription carved in stone above the main entrance to the World War Memorial: "To commemorate the valor and sacrifice of the land, sea and air forces of the United States and all who rendered faithful and loyal service at home and overseas in the World War; to inculcate a true understanding and appreciation of the privilege of American citizenship; to inspire patriotism and respect for the laws to the end that peace may prevail, justice be administered, public order maintained and liberty perpetuated."The commission operates and manages war memorial properties, including the Indiana War Memorial, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument,the new Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum, University Park, Veterans Memorial Plaza, American Legion Mall, Obelisk Plaza, and the USS Indianapolis Memorial on the canal.
