Mission Statement

We are a Global Network of Photo Restoration Volunteers

Insurance can replace homes, furniture and automobiles in time of need. However, photographs, which are important pieces of a family's history, are unprotected. Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) is a volunteer network of professional photojournalists and amateur digital photographers, graphic designers, image restoration artists and others. OPR's mission is to repair photographs damaged by unforeseen circumstances such as house fires and natural disasters at no cost to the people who own them.

Description

Teams of OPR volunteers travel to areas affected by tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina. On site, the volunteers meet with victims to look over their damaged photos to determine what can be saved.

Salvageable photos are digitally copied via high-end professional grade digital cameras. The digital files are distibuted via the web to OPR's worldwide network of volunteers.

The volunteer restoration artists repair the damaged photos using software such as Adobe Photoshop. Restorations can take anywhere from a few minutes to days and weeks to complete.

The restored digital file is sent back to OPR's distribution hub. From there a new print of the photograph is made and sent back to the image owner.

All of this work is done at no charge to the image owners.
