Mission Statement

To develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at tournaments.

Description

Southwest DI is a regional chapter of Destination Imagination. We cover 40 counties and cities (list is available on our website) in southwestern Virginia. Our regional tournament takes place in Roanoke County.

Are you looking for a creative outlet? Do you like to solve problems? Do you get a kick out of watching kids come alive as they discover what they can do? Then Destination Imagination might be just the thing for you! Destination Imagination (DI) helps kids break out of the tried and true to discover what they can do when their imaginations are given free reign. Parents can’t do it for them. This is all kids!

Kids form teams under the supervision of a Team Manager and work on their solutions from fall to spring.

Then they compete in a regional tournament to show off creative solutions. Winners advance to the state tournament, to compete with other regional winners from Virginia. Winners at the state tournament advance to Global Finals, where they compete with teams from around the world!

We need volunteers (18+ years*) to help with positions such as co-Challenge Masters, Appraisers, and Tournament Volunteers.

*There are limited volunteer roles available for students under 18.

Interested? You will be trained in everything you need to know to perform your role, and you can even dress up in a costume if you want! If you’re into technology, structures, or science, drama (fine arts), creative problem solving, and working with kids of all ages, why not check us out?

Southwest DI could really use your help, and you might find out that you get back more than you give!
