Mission Statement

The mission of the Save Raja Ampat Foundation is to sustain the biocultural assets of Raja Ampat, Indonesia for the benefit of both local people’s livelihoods and the nature-rich coastal ecosystems where these people live. We help by improving access to essential resources such as safe drinking water, by providing environmental education, and through supporting green micro-economic development. As our activities are guided by biocultural science and local knowledge, we respect local values, wisdom, and time-honored adaptations to the environment, while offering scientific innovations to modern problems and community-directed initiatives. We do this in legally and culturally sensitive cooperation with local authorities and the indigenous and local peoples of the archipelago. We further assist relevant legal partners create meaningful policies and programs, while conducting scientific research that will yield products and services for the benefit the region’s biodiversity and peoples’ livelihoods and cultures in Raja Ampat.
