Mission Statement
The Fremont County Victim Assistance Unit is a law enforcement based program committed to addressing the needs and rights of all crime victims by providing support, information, referrals and community education. We are mandated to insure that all crime victims are treated with dignity and respect and are provided with information as to their victimization.
Description
The Fremont County Victim Assistance Unit (FCVAU) was established in 1991 with a volunteer staff who provided services for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the Florence Police Department. In 1994 a full-time Director was hired to oversee the program and its volunteers. The purpose of the FCVAU is to provide 24x7 crisis intervention, victim compensation information, agency referrals, criminal justice advocacy and follow-up services to victims of crime.
Victim Assistance is provided for a wide variety of crimes and circumstances; domestic violence, sexual assault, 1st - 3rd degree assault, suicide, death investigations, as well as emergency services for victims and their families. Services include on-scene assists, contacts by telephone, in writing, or in person and referrals to safe housing and other community resources. In 2013, the FCVAU assisted over 400 victims and based on the current crime trends this unit will continue to assist 400 to 500 crime victims each year.
