Mission Statement
The Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) is a non-profit, public interest law and advocacy firm serving the poor. We give priority to policy issues and civil cases in which the most basic necessities of life are at stake, and where our advocacy can benefit families statewide. We work to empower our clients by holding government accountable for its policies and actions. We advocate on behalf of poor Tennesseans: in areas of public policy having the greatest impact on their health and welfare; by means which afford clients opportunities to make their own voices heard; and in ways which emphasize collaboration across lines of race, class and generation.
Description
TJC provides client advocacy and education: We provide legal assistance and community education to low-income families in Tennessee, and to other agencies that serve Tennessee families. We enable families to obtain needed medical and mental health care through TennCare.
TJC affects systemic changes: We serve as court-authorized counsel in class action litigation to secure federal rights for all 1.1 million children and adults on TennCare. TennCare reforms enacted as a result of our legal advocacy have positively affected the lives of 1.1 million Tennesseans.
