Mission Statement

For twenty years, Young Dance has offered a place for youth in our community to build body and spirit through the creative expression of dance. In the process of making dances, Young Dancers learn how to take an idea and make it into something. They learn how to participate in an ensemble, take risks, partner, lead, and listen.

We provide young people the opportunity for artistic expression, for achievement of high quality performance, and for appreciation of cultural and artistic diversity. In addition to teaching modern dance technique, we also teach our students the creative process of making dances.

Young Dance is unique because dancers are encouraged to develop their own individual choreographic voice. Workshops in other art forms such as improvisational theater, puppetry, creative writing and visual arts broaden the creative experience -- resulting in dancers who are not only moving bodies in space, but also thinking artists.

Description

Young Dance Classes are open and do not require an audition. Our classes are structured so that dancers can jump in and join a class anytime during the year. Students of all levels and backgrounds enjoy our collaborative and creative approach to dance! The first class it free -- come give Young Dance a try!

Community Dance Classes for all ages
Young dance offers modern dance classes for kids ages 7 and up, creative movement for preschoolers, and a special class for boys ages 7 to 12 who are interested in exploring dance in a "gender neutral" environment. Classes are held in southwest Minneapolis and are open to everyone -- you do not have to be a member of The Company to participate in our dance classes.

The Company

Young Dance gives young, emerging choreographers the opportunity to show their work and also lays the groundwork for young people to gain the skills and confidence to consider careers as professional artists by giving them the opportunity to take creative and physical risks. The company members of Young Dance have a deep desire to express themselves and translate ideas and thoughts into something that can be shared with others. Dancers have likened their experience in Young Dance as a "person opening" experience in which the artistic process can be transferred to other areas of their lives.

The Company is made up of 25 to 30 dancers, ages 7 to 18. We rarely turn away any young person due to lack of training. Auditions for The Company are held twice a year in the spring and fall. If you would like to be notified about auditions, please email us and ask to be added to our mailing list.
