The mission of CASA of the 16 th JDC, an entity of Louisiana CASA, is to advocate for the best interests of the abused and neglected children in the 16 th Judicial District Court through the services of specially selected and trained volunteers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds within the community.
CASA of the 16 th JDC is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains volunteers from the community to advocate for abused and neglected children in the foster care system. CASA of the 16 th JDC operates in St. Martin, Iberia, and St. Mary Parishes. CASA is the community's way into an otherwise confidential court proceeding, a way for the community to give back and make a difference in changing a child's future for the better. CASA volunteers visit children in the foster care system at least once per month. They contact foster parents, teachers, therapists, and doctors to aid in understanding what is happening in the children's lives. CASA volunteers work with attorneys involved in the case and foster care workers to ensure that the children's needs are being met. CASA volunteers are assigned one to two cases where attorneys and foster care workers have numerous cases and children assigned to them. CASA volunteers are able to give these children one on one time and give these children a face in the court system. CASA volunteers attend court and submit a report with concerns and recommendations to the presiding judge based on what they believe is in the best interest of the children they are assigned.
