Mission Statement
The San Francisco Silent Film Festival is dedicated to educating the public about silent film as an art form and its historical value as a cultural record.
Description
The only non-profit organization in the United States devoted exclusively to presenting silent era films with live musical accompaniment, The San Francisco Silent Film Festival holds its annual two-day festival at the Castro Theatre, a silent era movie palace in San Francisco. Like a museum, we curate and present shows of one-of-a-kind historical objects. We search worldwide to find archival 35mm film prints, invite expert musicians to compose and perform musical scores and present the films the way they were meant to seen, on the big screen and with live accompaniment. Our 9th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival this past July attracted more than 7,000 people from all over the Bay Area and beyond.
