HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is seeking a volunteer to provide office assistance one to two days per week for a total of 4 to 6 hours weekly. Tasks include writing thank you letters to donors, data entry, scanning, outreach to potential in-kind donors, event planning, document organization, donation procurement, and more. The ability to type 40 WPM is helpful as is a level of comfort with making "cold calls" to Bay Area businesses. Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel are helpful as well. HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is seeking one to two volunteers to provide wig consultation and fitting services for breast cancer patients at its Fremont location. Our wig program -- "Hair With Care" -- is a unique opportunity to support breast cancer patients who have lost their hair or are anticipating hair loss due to planned treatment. The ideal volunteer will possess a current cosmetology license, have experience with wig fittings, and (most important) engage with patients in a compassionate and supportive manner. The workspace for this volunteer opportunity located at our Program Location in Fremont and was designed in a way that enhances privacy and mirrors a salon experience. We have a large selection of wigs and partial wigs in stock. Brands carried by HERS include Jon Reneau, Dream USA, and Henry Margu. Tasks include assisting patients in the process of choosing a wig which involves discussing their style, helping them try on various wigs, and providing wig care instruction. Taking clear and concise visit notes is important; our staff members will update our patient electronic health record with those notes. Note that scheduling patient visits and selling merchandise will be handled by our medical receptionist. HERS is open Monday through Friday; we are flexible with volunteer scheduling and are open to discussing shifts between the hours of 9 am - 1 pm or 2 pm - 5 pm. A commitment of at least two hours per volunteer day is preferred. The volunteer must undergo a background check and sign a patient confidentiality agreement. Design and assemble flyers for social media kits to promote events and fundraisers. Utilize photography and video editing skills to create visual media for virtual and printed use. Research current trends and breast cancer-related articles to keep our audience engaged and educated. Requirements: Strong organizational and writing skills. Proficiency in social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads, etc.). Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva and/or Adobe Suite. We are first and foremost a service for women and women’s health. Our programs enunciate and further fulfill the mission of the foundation to serve all women, including the underserved, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our programs are a service designed to help patients overcome the devastating emotional and physical effects of breast cancer treatment. We provide a safe, compassionate environment for breast cancer survivors to be properly fitted for bras, prostheses, lymphedema garments, and wigs. The service and the products of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation are vital to breast cancer patients’ physical and emotional healing.
