Mission Statement

The Bay School is a non-profit 501c3
organization whose mission is to provide quality art education to all people, regardless of age or ability. As stated in our corporate mission
statement we:

¨ Sponsor or conduct educational workshops,
training, conferences, programs and
demonstrations of techniques employed in
visual arts.

¨ Support and encourage economic development
of Mathews County in an environmentally
sustainable manner.

¨ Foster an appreciation of the arts and encourage people of all ages and abilities to explore their creativity.

¨ Provide a resource for lifelong learning.

¨ Support local artists' endeavors by offering
space in our gallery.

¨ Aim to become a regional arts center and
community asset, supporting all aspects of the arts, including music and theater, and to
contribute to the revitalization of Mathews

At the Bay School, we believe there is an
artist in everyone. Over 100 classes are
offered in fine art and crafts. There are three classrooms including our gallery.

Over 30 talented local artists teach our
classes. We have basket weaving, rug
hooking , culinary and pottery instructors,
as well as painting, drawing, collage, and more. Many times the student becomes the teacher! As a statewide member of the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, we are able to bring exciting new classes to the Bay School
each year, including a mobile glass studio!

The Bay School offers over a dozen community outreach programs. These programs are funded through private foundations, grants and generous donors.

Our gallery has over 50 artists’ work
displayed at any time. We have fine art
paintings, pottery, stained glass, jewelry,
baskets and more. We encourage our
students to display their work. We also have an art supply store. Annually, we host a statewide juried art show, Art Speaks on the Bay, which brings dozens of new artists to our gallery walls.
