The Facilities and Habitat Crew meets every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Indian Rock Nature Preserve, (weather permitting). Staff will lead a variety of projects around the preserve including wood splitting and stacking, painting, general beautification projects, litter removal, trail maintenance, special event set-up, and more. If interested, fill out a Volunteer Application via our website at www.elcct.org and navigate to the "Get Involved" section. Weekly commitment is not necessary.

The Nature Center is home to a variety of native and exotic animals. Three native birds of prey reside at the Nature Center including two Eastern Screech Owls and a Barred Owl. The reptile species include: Black Rat snake, Corn snake, Western Hognose snake, Bearded Dragon, Cuban knight Anole, Painted Turtle, Common Musk Turtle, Spotted Turtle, Box Turtle, and Crested Gecko. The Amphibians include: Grey Tree Frog, Whites Tree frog, Green Frog, Wood Frog, American toad, Spring Peeper and Yellow-banded Dart frog. Insects include: Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and Giant Cave Roach. Each of these animals has a specific diet and habitat parameters that must be maintained. Attention to detail is very important when caring for a wide variety of species. Animal care volunteers assist with day to day-to-day care of live animals and responsibilities include feeding, monitoring health of animals, cleaning cages and exhibits. Youth- Age 14 and up. Adult- Age 18 and up. Position is available during Visitor Center open hours of 10am-4pm on Thursdays. Care of the animals will take at least 2 hours. Training provided. Volunteers interested in assisting with our resident animals should have love and respect of animals. Previous animal care experience preferred but not required. We will train the right person. Must not be squeamish about cleaning tanks and enclosures or handling each species food items which could include: mice, crickets, mealworms, grubs and cockroaches. Maturity and common sense a must.

Welcome to the Environmental Learning Center of Connecticut!- "Inspiring an appreciation for, and enjoyment of nature, through education and conservation, fostering a healthy environment and an improved quality of life". We are looking for interested volunteers to assist in the maintenance of our 750 acres of property, specifically at the Indian Rock Nature Preserve and the Harry C. Barnes Memorial Nature Center. Indian Rock is ELCCT's educational facility which includes an educational center, apple orchard, demonstration farm, a pond, wigwams, barns and acres of forest. The Nature Center is our public interface and includes a visitor center, live animals, interactive exhibits and 2 miles of hiking trails. We could use your help in maintaining it all! Mowing lawn, maintaining the hiking trails, repairing barns and outbuildings, painting, cleaning, gardening, splitting wood- you name it! We can also host your company's Volunteer Work Day. ELCCT offers a diversity of hands-on experiential programs using a variety of resources and facilities. Our programs are offered at the Barnes Nature Center, Indian Rock Nature Preserve and in the schools of Connecticut. Annually, we provided our environmental educational programs to over 25,000 children and families from over 70 Connecticut communities!

Guest Services Volunteers are, many times, the first and last people that visitors to the Nature Center see and speak to. This important position entails greeting and orienting visitors to the Visitor Center. This includes talking about Environmental Learning Centers of CT as an organization, describe the Nature Center and exhibits, introducing events and programs, suggesting the benefits of membership, taking admission, checking membership cards and running the nature gift shop. Guest Services Volunteers also meet and greet our guests during special events. Appropriate for ages 18 and up. A friendly, outgoing and engaging demeanor is Required. Ability to use a desk top computer, I-Pad for credit card payments, and a cash register. Willingness to learn new things.

Welcome to the Environmental Learning Center of Connecticut!- "Inspiring an appreciation for, and enjoyment of nature, through education and conservation, fostering a healthy environment and an improved quality of life". The Harry C. Barnes Memorial Nature Center is looking for interested volunteers that are friendly and enjoy welcoming guests, informing visitors about the Nature Center exhibits, trails and all the facilities we have to offer. The nature center is open Thursday - Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 12-4 and serves as the public interface of the Environmental Learning Centers of CT. We many live animals on view including reptiles and amphibians, a Barred Owl and two Eastern Screech Owls. The nature center has many interactive exhibits for children and weekend programs for adults and children alike. The Center also has a small gift shop. With advanced training, Nature Center Docents provide guests of the Visitor Center with detailed information about the animals, exhibits, upcoming programs and answer any questions they may have. Docents assist with special events, may be trained to handle some of the animals, may lead programs and group activities such as guided hikes, pond study, live animal programs, arts and crafts projects and more. This position will help to ensure that visitors walk away informed, inspired, and empowered to appreciate and care for the natural world. This is a wonderful position for natural science degree college students, recent grads and retirees. ELCCT offers a diversity of hands-on experiential programs using a variety of resources and facilities. Our programs are offered at the Barnes Nature Center, Indian Rock Nature Preserve and in the schools of Connecticut. In 2018, we provided our environmental educational programs to over 22,000 children and families from over 70 Connecticut communities! In addition to our education programs, ELCCT also serves as a land trust and has protected over 750 acres of land in Bristol and Burlington, Connecticut.
