Established in 1999, Table to Table is the only dedicated food rescue program serving northern New Jersey, with a service area encompassing Essex, Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties. Every day of the week, the organization picks up (from over 200 dedicated community partners) wholesome fresh and prepared food that would otherwise be discarded. It is then safely delivered, free of charge, to over 80 elder care facilities, drug rehabilitation centers, homeless shelters, safe homes for victims of domestic violence and their children, HIV day centers, children’s day care and after school programs, and pantries serving the "working poor".
From its inception in 1999, Table to Table’s leadership determined the organization would do only one thing and do it better than anyone else--pick up leftover fresh prepared and perishable food from food donors who would otherwise have to discard it and deliver it the same day to human services agencies serving our hungry neighbors in need. We started with a single van, picked up food from 3 donor restaurants and served 30,000 meals in our short 4-month first year. In 2015, utilizing five refrigerated trucks, Table to Table rescued food from over 200 food donors that provided 15 million meals and food packages to 243,000 men, women and children served by 82 human services agencies in our catchment area that includes Bergen, Essex, Passaic and Hudson counties in northern New Jersey. Table to Table has increased the amount of food rescued and meals delivered anywhere from 10 to 30% each and every year we have been in operation. In order to accomplish this, we identify more food donors and set a goal for ourselves to deliver more food to more hungry people than the year before. We have saved nearly 30,000 tons of food from landfills and instead delivered it in the form of over 90 million nutritious meals that have sated the hunger of several hundred thousand of our New Jersey neighbors.
