Mission Statement

Stairstep is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to understanding and then implementing strategies necessary to revive a spirit of community among African American people which includes addressing family, health, and social issues.

Description

The Church Olympics & Family Day is a one of our many responses in addressing health disparity for six years. This unique, climactic celebration is the result of education to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and diabetes throughout the year. Intentionally creating a day of physical activity in a fun and competitive environment integrates education with action. In 2007, our Church Olympics and Family Day event drew over 500 adults and children. This year, with the participation of 25 churches, we anticipate 1,500 in attendance. Your support will help us to continue promoting a healthier lifestyle by including physical activity in the community for all ages, thereby reducing the health disparities for the African American community. The success of our four previous Church Olympics and Family Day events reinforces our sense of vision and possibility. In partnership with national and community organizations prior to the event physical activity and dietary interventions are instituted. The week begins with a fun evening of roller-skating, volleyball, and a basketball tournament for all ages, and culminates with track and field events. An opportunity is provided for those with culinary skills to offer healthy foods at the concession stands, and attendees sign a pledge to continue some form of physical activity during the summer, taking charge of their health.
