Mission Statement

Breakthrough Urban Ministries provides neighborhood-based holistic services that empower individuals, families and urban communities to overcome poverty, addiction and isolation.

Description

Breakthrough Urban Ministries operates in three main program areas:

Basic Needs Services: Breakthrough Urban Ministries operates two homeless shelters in East Garfield Park on Chicago's West Side. Basic needs such as food and shelter are met while homeless guests work toward a more permanent solution to their situation. Through these programs, over 400 homeless adults are provided with 60,000 meals annually, the majority by volunteers working in the Manna Ministry program.

Life Transforming Skills: Homeless guests at Breakthrough Urban Ministries are surrounded by supportive services that address the life skills necessary to overcome homelessness, including addictions counseling, employment training, transitional work experience, access to on-site health care, spiritual development, adult education, and permanent supportive housing.

Youth & Family Services: After school programs for neighborhood youth focus on developing the social and academic skills needed to succeed in life. Volunteer coaches work with 250 youth each year in basketball, baseball, volleyball and more through Breakthrough Urban Ministries' Community Health & Fitness program. Volunteer tutors in the Nettie Bailey Student Achievement Program help 60 youth with homework after school Tuesday through Friday.
