Mission Statement

The Diabetes Media Foundation (DMF) communicates with, inspires and advocates for the community of people touched by diabetes, using a variety of media forms. Our goal is to reach, support and inform people with diabetes from all walks of life and demonstrate that people with diabetes can live a long, active, full and healthy life.

As its primary activity, DMF publishes ASweetLife (ASL), an international online magazine devoted to high-quality diabetes journalism, which features essays and articles on a broad spectrum of subjects including: nutrition; science and technology; medical information; recipes; and personal stories. As patient experts, we believe knowledge, community and support are essential pillars to living well with diabetes.

Description

Diabetes Media Foundation (DMF) was founded by Michael Aviad and Jessica Apple, two patient advocates who live with type 1 diabetes and understand first-hand how frightening and isolating it can be to live with diabetes. To respond to this isolation, they founded DMF as a nonprofit media organization devoted to disseminating information about, and generating community around, living a healthy life with diabetes. DMF’s major program is a monthly magazine, ASweetLife, which helps people living with or affected by diabetes to find community and support from one another, to share stories of strength (and weakness), recipes for healthy eating and information on the latest science and technology related to diabetes care and management.

In the words of one of our readers: "I come to this site every day and have learned so much about managing diabetes and living with diabetes. More than anything else, I’ve appreciated the community and support you provide. I don’t feel alone living with diabetes, and that is a gift."
