Mission Statement

Project NEO establishes and maintains a learning program and provides a safe and supportive environment which encourages students to explore their academic and career interests while developing leadership skills and personal growth essential for their success. By applying proven techniques at key points of opportunities, our mission is to achieve higher academic standards for at-risk elementary school children and give our aspiring high school and college aged students first-hand experience in becoming role models and leaders for our community.

Description

Project NEO is a fully inclusive, after-school program designed to meet the needs of all learners in a noncompetitive setting, focusing on the process of strengthening core foundational skills in reading, writing, and math for at-risk youth in the San Gabriel Valley. First instituted in the Alhambra Unified School District in the 2009-2010 school year, Project NEO has served over 500 students to date. It is a free service for elementary and middle school students, tutored by volunteer high school and college aged students and Project NEO staff.

As part of its leadership development program, Project NEO recently initiated a Student Leaders Board which consists of 12 bright individuals from local high schools and colleges. The purpose of Project NEO is to enhance the educational skills of at-risk youth and to increase socialization, self-esteem, and communication skills that will empower our young leaders.
