Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources

Description

Minnewaska State Park Preserve is characterized by unique and sensitive environments, vlauable for their many rare geological and ecological features. The Park Preserve is situated in Ulster County on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge which rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level. The ridge dominates the Park Preserve and its immediate environs, as well as the rolling agricultural landscape of the surrounding towns and hamlets below. The terrain is rugged and rocky, blanketed by dense hardwood forest encircling two lakes. Clear streams cut into valleys, incising sheer cliffs and ledges and emerging in waterfalls. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are very popular activities. Visitors also enjoy swimming, picnicking, boating, and marveling at the scenery.
