Mission Statement

Washington Reading Corps at Naval Avenue Early Learning Center

The Washington Reading Corps at Naval Avenue Early Learning Center is a literacy tutoring program that focuses on improving students' reading skills in grades K-3. For each grade, WRC has established a specific program that focuses on the five components of reading:

1)Phonemic awareness: The individual sounds that letters and combinations of letters make.
2)Phonics: The relationship between the way the word is written and the way it sounds.
3)Fluency: Reading with correct expression, appropriate rate and accuracy.
4)Vocabulary development: Understanding what words mean and how they are used in different contexts.
5)Reading comprehension: Truly understanding what is being read.

You can make a positive difference in a child's life by volunteering for WRC. As a volunteer, you will work one-on-one with a student for 15 to 20 minutes. All the materials and training you need to be an effective tutor will be provided, and you get to choose what grade you would like to tutor. We have times available throughout the day for volunteers. Twenty minutes is all it takes to help a child become a better reader and a better student.

Any person interested in volunteering some of their time to make a difference in a child's life should call WRC at (360)473-4489 or e-mail volunteer coordinator Rhonda Ramirez at rhonda.ramirez@bsd.wednet.edu.
