Description

Turtle Back Zoo is nestled within 2,000 acres of the Essex County South Mountain Reservation. It has been in existence since 1963. We became accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2006, a professional nationwide zoo association.

Last year Turtle Back Zoo provided over 340,000 visitors with the opportunity to see the animals in their natural environments, attend one of the many educational programs offered daily, take a pony ride, have a leisurely picnic, ride the antique train through the woods, and immerse themselves in the ambiance of the Reptile House. We have also provided over 50,000 people with the opportunity to attend one of our off-site mobile zoo educational programs.

The zoo's goal is to combine not only a day full of fun for the entire family, but to help the public learn what they can do on a local level to help conserve the environment.
