Mission Statement

The Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy (SAPPA) delivers quality musical education to minority, at-risk youngsters through music workshop and clinic programs. We prepare students for scholarship and arts competitions and direct our motivated students on to Saturday Conservatories and other instructional programs. SAPPA works with community and private organizations to increase community awareness and participation in existing programs, providing support systems for families in underserved communities with pertinent information, and assisting students in the application process.

Description

SAPPA Music Workshop brings age appropriate general musical instruction to students, ages 7 through 18. One goal of our program is to develop an understanding and appreciation of music through weekly group music classes that deliver the basic musical concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, tempo, dynamics, expression, reading and writing musical notation and the joy of musical creation. Goal two is to immerse students in the music of the African-American and Latino experience focusing on historical characters, trends and genres and music's affect on the development of society. SAPPA Audition Workshop works with performing arts students to help prepare them to enter the job market with realistic goals, to be able to work, prosper and support themselves as performing artists. This workshop helps to fill in the gaps, focusing on personal presentation and the science of interviews and auditions; role play, audition program, critique each other using standard competition guideline. Representatives from college music departments, special programs and scholarship competitions discuss opportunities and the application process. The AX Instrument Loan Program collects musical instruments and makes them available to students and schools who are in need. In order to qualify for the instrument loan program family must verify need and the student must agree to: practice daily, follow the rules of the music program and maintain the instrument.
