Mission Statement

Helping Our Seniors Help Themselves

Description

The John King Senior Center was founded in 1979, by longtime Visitacion Valley resident John W. King, Sr., in response to a dramatic rise in crimes against elders in the community.

John King sought support from Mayor Dianne Feinstein and other city officials to begin a transportation company exclusively for the elderly, the frail and physically challenged. The John King Senior Center slowly grew from providing escort services for seniors to and from appointments to owning and providing rides for seniors with their own fleet of paratransit vans.

Mr. King recognized other needs amongst his senior clients as well, such as, social interaction with peers, health & nutrition education and affordable housing. With all of Mr. King's clientele on fixed low-incomes, he also felt compelled to find a way to ensure that the seniors he serviced had a means of receiving ample amounts of nutritious food items each month.

From this notion was born; The John King Senior Community. The John King Senior Community was built from the ground up, with funding from US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD,) in 2002. Our facility houses 90 units of low-income senior residential housing, an adult day social center and a childcare center for children ages 0 -3.

The John King Senior Center is a place where we strive to ensure that our aging population can stay active and healthy. We provide a safe clean environment where our seniors can meet & socialize daily while dining on low cost, highly nutritious & healthy hot lunches. Our center distributes food bags with fresh produce and healthcare items weekly and food boxes with canned food items and more once monthly.
