The Mayor’s Commission on Persons with Disabilities (MCPD) represents and addresses the concerns of the disability community.
Established by City ordinance in 1980, the MCPD is an appointed group of volunteers who are committed to integrating people with disabilities into all aspects of the community. At least 51% of the commission is composed of persons with disabilities.
Since 1990, the MCPD has acted as the City’s designated advisory body for ADA compliance. Responsibilities include:
- Advising the Mayor and City Council on matters affecting the disability community
- Reviewing and commenting on City policies, programs and actions
- Providing advice and assistance to other City boards and commissions
- Participating at the local, state and national levels for the advancement of disability rights
The City of Oakland is currently accepting nominations to fill several upcoming vacancies on the Mayor’s Commission on Persons with Disabilities (MCPD). Persons with professional expertise in architecture, design, engineering, urban planning, transportation, housing, employment, civil rights law, or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.
Applicants should live or work within the City of Oakland and demonstrate professional and/or personal expertise to help monitor and guide the City's policies and programs for serving the needs of Oaklanders with disabilities. Appointments will be effective September 2015 and will require a commitment to attend bimonthly evening meetings (every other month).
Until September 2015, the MCPD meets on the second Monday of each month from 1:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M., except during the month of August and as rescheduled for City holidays. All meetings are located in City Hall Hearing Room Three, adjacent to the 14th Street entrance.
