Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Our mission is to stimulate in prisoners an interest in life long learning by providing a selection of free, non-traditional correspondence courses. Our courses are designed to be both thought provoking and fun while encouraging objectivity and creativity. They relieve the boredom of prison life with an opportunity to spend time constructively. For many inmates, our courses are the only contact beyond the walls they have. Many go on to publish their works, earn Bachelor's degrees, and give much to the communities where they return.
College Guild is a nonprofit in operation since 2001. We have are based in Brunswick, Maine, and we reach/help students nationwide. Our board is a distinguished group of retired teachers, journalists, college students and a variety of other experts.
We have enrolled more than 5,000 students who are incarcerated and are seeking a chance to learn, improve, and grow. Unlike accredited prison courses, ours excludes no one - regardless of race, gender, age, sentencing, etc.
Through a mutually-anonymous correspondence school with careful guidance and quality control, volunteers "readers," get to read and respond to students' wonderful poetry, art and other works through our 25 courses, including Creative Writing, Travel, Logic, Marine Biology, and a diverse variety. It all goes through the mail, through our office, although volunteer readers reside across the U.S.
