Education/Information

A misconception is that hearing aids are the final solution in restoring hearing. However, there is so much more one can do to hear as well as understand better. Our monthly meetings feature expert guest speakers who teach us how to improve our hearing by 20% or more by teaching us communication strategies, auditory training techniques, new assisted listening technologies and much more. Advocacy

HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee has been active in promoting better access in the community for people with hearing loss, most notably; advocating for closed captioned movies, for loop systems in houses of worship, and live theater venues, for captioning of television news and emergency announcements, and captioning of City Commission meetings. HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee participates in numerous OutReach events throughout Sarasota/Manatee counties.

Support Through its monthly meetings and social activities held throughout the year. HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee currently has 160+ active members and an additional 1,200 people who receive notifications of events. HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee publishes an electronic newsletter called "Listen Up". The chapter has a website (www.hlas.org), a Facebook page, and a Twitter account.

HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee represents a far wider number of people than its membership numbers reveal. The Center for Disease Control states that 16.1% of the US population has hearing loss, which translates to 145,000 people in Sarasota and Manatee County. HLAA-Sarasota has its work cut out and looks forward to the continued growth of the chapter as it tackles the most pressing challenges of hearing loss.
