Mission Statement

Through nautical exploration, hands-on exhibits and learning adventures for all ages, the museum brings to life the stories of Lake Champlain and its people. Our mission is to preserve and share the rich history of the Lake Champlain region, to identify and preserve sites and artifacts, to pursue educational activities and to sponsor, coordinate and otherwise support research projects necessary to protect and better understand the maritime history, cultural resources, perhistory and history of the Lake Champlain region.

Description

Founded in 1984 the museum is located on the shores of Lake Champlain with views of the Green Mountains and Adirondack Mountains of New York. There are nine exhibit buildings located on the grounds as well as a nationally known Nautical Archeology and Conservation Laboratory.

There are two authentic replicas boats used for education located in the harbor- the Philadelphia gunboat, a revolutionary era boat in Benedict Arnold's fleet used during the battle against the English and the Lois McClure, an 88 foot canal schooner.

There are many special events held during the season ( May to October) including a Pirates Festival, Native Ameican Heritage Festival and Small Boat Festival.

Volunteers are the heart of the museum and many opportunities abound.
