We are your American Cancer Society, and on behalf of the staff and our more than two
million volunteers, we are excited you want to learn what it means to be a volunteer for the

Our Challenge ... 2015 Nationwide Goals
By joining together, we can help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of
eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Our organization has set bold challenge goals
that will significantly lower cancer incidence and mortality rates and improve the quality of
life for all cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers by the year 2015.
With your help, we will achieve the following goals by 2015:
• Reduce cancer incidence by 25%, averting almost six million new diagnoses
• Reduce cancer mortality by 50%, preventing almost five million deaths
• Measurably improve the quality of life for all those touched by cancer
Our History
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 and has been committed to one mission:
eliminating cancer. In order to achieve our mission, the American Cancer Society has always
tapped into a unique and powerful resource - volunteers.
