Mission Statement
The mission of Compeer is to improve the quality of life of adults and children receiving mental health services by providing the support and friendship of a one-on-one relationship with a caring volunteer.
Description
Compeer is an international mental health program that matches trained community volunteers in supportive friendships with adults and children who are receiving mental health services. The program has over 80 affiliates in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
The word "Compeer" means a companion, peer, or equal. By filling this role, Compeer volunteers help reduce the loneliness and isolation that often accompany mental illness. By meeting regularly with their Compeer friends to share a variety of social, recreational, and educational activities, volunteers become positive role models, as well as help raise their friends' self-esteem, increase social skills, and encourage independence.
Using the power of friendship, you can help change someone's life.
