The Literacy Council of Crittenden County seeks "to improve the economic stability of individuals and the community by 1) building strong families, 2) building workplace efficiency and knowledge, and 3) building healthier standards of living through group and individual tutoring sessions.
We are a nonprofit educational program designed to fight illiteracy here in Crittenden County. Our program serves functionally illerate adults (16 and over) who are residents of CrittendenCounty. The Literacy Council is housed on the campus of the Mid-South Community College and works in a close partnership with the Adult Education Program. Our program relies on volunteers to tutor students in either group or individual settings. These individuals work with the students to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Literacy Counci volunteers help enable personal empowerment and independence for each of their students. By helping the student improve his or her reading skills, the volunteer tutor also helps improve the student's quality of life, the lives of the student's family members, and the quality of our community.
