Description

We are a nonprofit educational program designed to fight illiteracy here in Crittenden County. Our program serves functionally illerate adults (16 and over) who are residents of CrittendenCounty. The Literacy Council is housed on the campus of the Mid-South Community College and works in a close partnership with the Adult Education Program. Our program relies on volunteers to tutor students in either group or individual settings. These individuals work with the students to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Literacy Counci volunteers help enable personal empowerment and independence for each of their students. By helping the student improve his or her reading skills, the volunteer tutor also helps improve the student's quality of life, the lives of the student's family members, and the quality of our community.

I loved volunteering for the literacy council. Teaching others to read and seeing them achieve goals they've struggled with for their whole lives is amazing. It takes a lot of work, but it was well worth the reward.
